Identity & Self-Discovery

For when you want to understand yourself more deeply, not just change how you feel.

Sometimes there isn't one obvious problem that brings you to counselling.

You might have a life that looks relatively okay from the outside, yet feel disconnected from yourself, unsure what you actually want, or aware that something isn't quite working.

Perhaps you've spent a long time being who you needed to be for other people. You might be navigating a transition, questioning parts of your identity, or simply noticing that the roles you've occupied no longer feel like the whole story.

Counselling can give you space to slow down and become curious about who you are beneath expectations, habits and the ways you've learned to move through the world.

Why don't I feel like myself?

Our sense of self develops through our experiences, relationships and the environments we've had to adapt to.

Sometimes we become so accustomed to meeting expectations, caring for others or simply getting on with life that it becomes difficult to distinguish between who we are and who we've learned to be.

This might look like:

  • feeling disconnected from yourself or unsure who you are

  • struggling to know what you actually want

  • questioning your direction or purpose

  • feeling as though you've outgrown a previous version of yourself

  • relying heavily on other people's opinions or approval

  • adapting yourself depending on who you're with

  • feeling stuck despite knowing something needs to change

  • experiencing a major life or identity transition

  • wanting to understand yourself beyond the roles you occupy

You don't need to arrive at counselling with a clear explanation for any of this.

Sometimes the work begins simply with the feeling that there is more you want to understand.

Understanding yourself creates choice

Self-discovery isn't about uncovering one hidden, perfectly authentic version of yourself.

It's about becoming more aware of your patterns, needs, values, contradictions and the experiences that have shaped you.

When we understand ourselves more deeply, we have greater choice about what we want to carry forward and what we might be ready to do differently.
